WordPress is a free and open-source content management system (CMS) that powers millions of websites and blogs around the world. It was created in 2003 by Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little as a fork of an earlier blogging platform called b2/cafelog.
The name “WordPress” was suggested by Christine Selleck Tremoulet, a friend of Mullenweg, who thought it sounded catchy and appropriate for a blogging platform. The first version of WordPress, 0.7, was released on May 27, 2003, and included basic blogging features such as post categories, commenting, and permalinks.
